Granny’s Country White Bread

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter together until warm (about 110-115 degrees F).
  3. Add the milk mixture and egg to the flour mixture and mix well.
  4. Gradually add the remaining flour and mix until the dough is easy to handle.
  5. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  7. Punch the dough down and shape it into a loaf.
  8. Place the loaf in a greased loaf pan and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  10. Bake the bread for about 30-35 minutes, or until it is golden brown.
  11. Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack.
